Sucking sweets, a couple change seats for a second time.  Blocks, bricks, sand, cement.  Castle Way.  Cooks Coaches 99.  On foot through ‘NO THROUGH ROAD NETHERCLAY’.  Dark full sky.  Bird screams non-stop.  2 horses blindfolded with deep green.  Another has wrapped its face in blue.  Lilac rings around the teasels.  Whistles.  Scarlet Pimpernel.  Insects revving, gently turning engines over.  Strong yellow.  Bike’s squeak.  Green tree tunnel towards Staple Lawns’ clear spread.  Wheep.  Wheep.  Wheep.  Wheep.  A modest beat to walk the flat.  But a small table tries to shield a car.  And a horse scatters back.  ‘Walk on.’  Straight.  Staple Park Wood.  2 riders bulked up at the level of my face.  Good place to thump and canter, to walk away from poetry.  Off track, horses watch from a dark shed.  A white bath, empty.  Turn-tail down Underhill Lane.  Steady party-blowing birds in the hedges.  Quiet rain.  Soft and dull.
